Vocal Nodules

Vocal nodules are noncancerous growths on the vocal cords.  These harmless growths are described as thickened tissue that over time, becomes hard and calloused.

These vocal nodules are caused by overuse of the vocal cords and most often occur in those whose professions include coaching sports, singing or sports or hobbies where shouting or talking loud is needed such as cheerleading. Children often develop vocal nodules because of laughing and screaming loudly while at play. Seasonal allergies that can cause coughing or those who have been a cigarette smoker for many years can also develop vocal nodules because of the increased irritation to the vocal cords.

Because vocal nodules continue to grow larger if left untreated, it is important to seek treatment if you have a sign or symptom of vocal nodules. The most common sign is a hoarse voice that persists for 2 to 3 and shows no signs of improvement.  Other signs include pain while talking, scratchy voice, lump sensation in thraot, fatigue, and/or other voice distortions.

The most common treatment for vocal nodules is rest. Vocal therapy is another option that has a high rate of success and therapy usually helps with reducing the vocal abuse and learning how to avoid it and alternatives to the abuse as well as relaxation techniques.  If a large nodule is present or has not decreased in size with rest and therapy, surgical removal of the nodule is an option.
